Cambridge Young Learners English Test

Our Centre also provides test preparation courses for students who plan to take the Young Learners English Test

Young Learners Tests are standardised tests that assess the level of a student’s English and benchmarks their learning progress by awarding a certificate.  There are three levels: Starters, Movers and Flyers level.  Language is tested in meaningful and realistic ways using materials suitable for children.

The following guidelines are for reference only:

  • Starters - for children from the age of 6, usually Primary 1-2
  • Movers - for children between  8 and 11, usually Primary 3 – 4
  • Flyers - for children between  9 and 12, usually Primary 5 - 6

Each level consists of three components: Reading & Writing, Listening and Speaking.  Speaking is tested through a one-to –one interview with a trained assessor. Students will take the test at the British Council or at one of the ESF’s Authorised Centres.

Abbey English Centre is also a registered centre with ESF Educational Services to provide University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations for our students.

These are intensive courses for students to become familiar with the test.  Each lesson covers a theme needed for the test, eg sports, hobbies, animals.  Different parts of the test are focused on in each lesson and then practiced to help the students become accustomed with strategies needed to take the test.

*These courses run for 40 weeks.
